YOUR SKIN’S SUPER SHIELD AGAINST UV DAMAGE

Your Skin’s Super Shield Against UV Damage

Sunscreen goes far beyond sandy shores and beach umbrellas, it’s your year-round companion, even on cloudy days.  Think protection meets perfection when it comes to sunscreen.

In the realm of skincare, where the quest for radiant, youthful skin knows no bounds, one truth remains unwavering: sunscreen reigns supreme as the ultimate guardian against the ravaging forces of UV radiation.  As seasoned skin health experts here at the Skin Society, we can attest that if there’s one singular step you should prioritise in your daily regime, it’s sunscreen protection. Beyond its role in preserving a flawless complexion, sunscreen stands as a formidable barrier between your skin and the sun’s harmful UV rays, shielding against premature aging, pigmentation and the daunting spectre of skin cancer.  Whether you’re embarking on an elaborate skincare routine or simply seeking to safeguard your skin’s health, the importance of sunscreen cannot be overstated.

Sunscreen formulations generally fall into two categories: physical and chemical.  Physical sunscreens often contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide and create a physical barrier that reflects and scatters UV radiation away from the skin.  On the other hand, chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds that absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin.

Physical sunscreens are known for their broad-spectrum protection, making them effective against both UVA and UVB rays.  They are also less likely to cause skin irritation, making them suitable for sensitive skin.  However, choosing a quality sunscreen is key to ensure you keep up using it on a regular basis as some can leave a white cast on the skin and often feel heavier compared to chemical sunscreens.  That’s why here at the Skin Society we did our research and found a skincare brand specialising in sun protection to ensure you get the best from your sunscreens.  Whenever you have a treatment with us we will always ensure you leave wearing one of our tailored physical sunscreens protecting your skin.  Follow the link here to discover our fabulous range of sun protection.

Chemical sunscreens on the other hand, tend to be more lightweight providing broad-spectrum protection and a cosmetically elegant feel but they may pose risks of skin sensitivity, systemic absorption, decreased effectiveness over time, and impact on the environment.  If you have sensitive skin or concerns about ingredient safety you may wish to explore alternative sunscreen options such as our physical blockers.

Sun Protection Factor measures the sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn.  We all know that the higher the SPF, the greater the protection but it may surprise you to learn that there isn’t a great deal in it.    SPF15 blocks around 93% of UVB rays, whereas SPF30 blocks about 97% with SPF40 and above blocking around 98%.  The truth is no sunscreen can provide 100% protection, so reapplication is key for prolonged sun exposure.

To reap the full benefits of sunscreen always apply a generous amount of sunscreen to cover all exposed areas of skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.  Don’t forget often overlooked areas like the ears, neck and hands.  Reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating heavily.  Remember SPF in makeup is often insufficient for adequate sun protection, so always use a dedicated sunscreen underneath your cosmetics.

When choosing what sunscreen will work best for you consider your skin type and specific needs.  Mattifying sunscreens are great for those with oily or combination skin, providing a shine-free finish that lasts throughout the day.  However, if you have dry or sensitive skin opting for hydrating formulas enriched with moisturising ingredients will keep your skin both nourished and protected.

These days tinted sunscreens have come a long way offering the dual benefits of sun protection and light coverage, making them an excellent option for daily wear.  The tint helps to even out skin tone and provides a subtle glow eliminating the need for additional makeup.  Additionally, tinted formulas can help prevent the dreaded white cast often associated with physical sunscreens, enhancing your natural complexion while shielding your skin from harmful UV rays.

Don’t Forget Your Hands!

Many people associate sunscreen with summertime and beach vacations, but UV radiation is present year-round, even on cloudy days.  Harmful UV rays can penetrate through glass, making daily sunscreen application essential, whether your indoors or outdoors and this is especially true if you do a lot of driving.  Our hands are constantly exposed to UV radiation, yet they are often neglected when it comes to sun protection.  Driving exposes a significant risk, as UV rays can penetrate through car windows.  Regular sunscreen application on the hands can help prevent premature aging, sunspots and skin cancer, ensuring your hands stay as youthful and healthy as your face.

Prevention Vs Correction

When it comes to skincare, prevention is always better than correction.  UV damage accumulates over time, manifesting as wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer.  By diligently applying sunscreen daily, you not only shield your skin from immediate sun damage but also safeguard its long-term health and vitality.  By investing in your skin early you can enjoy a radiant complexion for years to come.

Whether you’re lounging on the beach or running errands in town, by making sunscreen your skincare staple you can watch your skin thrive, so don’t wait until it’s too late to start.

Ready to Take Back Your Glow?

It’s undeniable that the sun’s rays wreak havoc on our skin.  As much as we love the look a tan isn’t a badge of glowing health but rather a sign of DNA damage, lurking in the deeper layers of the skin.  This damage spells trouble with the onset of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone.  When sunlight bombards the skin, it triggers a crisis, prompting a rush into repair mode.  While this surge of inflammation fighters might temporarily give you a complexion boost, it’s a short-term illusion but to achieve lasting skin health, you’ll need to adopt a long-term approach.

As we come out of hibernation the repercussions of sun exposure from last summer begin to emerge.  If your skin feels rough, parched and sensitive, with patches of uneven pigmentation we have the answers with our SOS treatment solutions to get you back on track.  Why not book a consultation with one of our skin health experts to prioritise a corrective and protective plan to minimise damage and avoid the pitfalls this summer.
